Opsaridium microcephalus is found in entire Lake Malawi but also in surrounding streams and rivers that flow into the lake. The adult animals are usually living in shallow water above the sandbottom in the lake while the young ones often can be found in the rivers and in the neighbourhood of estuaries. During the rainy season the older animals swim upstream in the many streams and rivers to mate at an altitude of about 300 meters above sea level and depose their eggs in the cold water of the mountain streams. This species is also called Lake-trout. The total length that they can reach is about 30 cm. You can best keep these fish in an aquarium of dimensions such that they can grow and have a lot of swimming space. The temperature of the water should not be too high. So, these are no animals to keep in a small tank!! Generally they will leave the other inhabitants alone, especially when they are not yet fully grown. These fish feed on Usipa, a sardine-like fish. They often follow large schools of these sardines along the coast and feed on very good with them. |
